Awhile back I have mentioned that self-defense involves threat management. This entails managing all possible causes of threats and physical risk involving conflict. But it is also a fact that there are variables that you can not predict or information that are unknown at some point in time resulting to open hostility or conflict. Let's just say shit happened. What will you do then?
Forget about this martial art being better than that, this system being more powerful than whatever. Many practitioners have discovered that in real life this is not so. Everything is situational.
In Wayaan we consider only the following in effective conflict resolution. The first response should be "de-escalation". There is no point in being macho. A lot of macho guys end up dead anyway. We can de-escalate a conflict situation through verbal and body language techniques. Most parties to a conflict actually do not want to get hurt. So if one walks away, the other sighs for relief (albeit secretly). But hey, everybody lives.
But going back to the hypothetical question what if shit happens? In Wayaan we resolve such open hostility with "Agos", "Buhos" and "Unos". These are guidelines of course. Outlining the proper mental attitude towards conflict. Technically, all responses to conflict must be determined by leverage, momentum, intent, mental and physical fitness.
Agos would entail leverage. Being able to flow with your opponent is doing. Breaking his rhythm and his timing. Buhos would entail momentum, occupying space and controlling it. Unos, the most demanding and difficult stage in combatives, would entail one's intent to inflict damage, pain and relentless brutality. The three guidelines would be anchored by how ready you are mentally and physically.
Going into the Unos stage is difficult since we as humans abhor violence. At the Unos stage you are determined to tear apart your opponent. You are intent to rip him into shreds and end the conflict there and now.
